Celebrating Creativity and Sustainability: My Journey in the IIW 2025 Digital Collection Welded Art Photographic Exhibition – Progressing Biodiversity.
I am thrilled to share my experience of being published in the IIW Digital Welded Art Exhibit for the 4th year in a row. An unique opportunity that allowed me to channel my creativity into a sustainable art piece addressing a practical problem. The journey from concept to creation has been both fulfilling and enlightening, and I am grateful for the chance to contribute to this beautiful collection.
The inspiration for my project came from a common issue many homeowners face—water runoff. In my yard, I noticed a persistent dripping spot, a small inconvenience that my dog often tried to investigate by digging at the source. This led me to a creative solution: why not capture that water and put it to good use? With this idea in mind, I decided to create a rain barrel art feature that would not only solve the problem but also contribute to my garden by watering plants.
Working on this project became a delightful family affair. I had the pleasure of involving my two youngest children in the process, which turned out to be a wonderful way to bond and spend quality time together. It was a joy to see them engaged and learning about creativity, sustainability, and even some basic equipment handling. For my daughter, Linah, it was an excellent opportunity to explore the world of art and trade, while my son Clint got to participate in the gardening aspect. I can’t wait to see if he enjoys the fruits (and vegetables) of our labor!
The experience of crafting this rain barrel art piece was not just about creating something beautiful; it was also about instilling values of sustainability and resourcefulness in my children. By transforming a simple barrel into a functional piece of art, we created something that serves a purpose while also capturing the essence of creativity and sustainability.
I am immensely grateful to Chris Smallbone and the IIW for providing such a platform for people like myself. Their dedication to fostering collaboration, creativity and sustainability through the welding community to stimulate important conversations is truly inspiring. This exhibition is a testament to the power of art in addressing real-world issues and to bring knowledge, communities and families together in sharing progress.
As you explore the IIW’s Digital Welded Art Exhibit, I invite you to appreciate not just the artistry on display but also the stories behind each piece. Each creation reflects the unique experiences and motivations of the artist, and the SDG’s they reflect.
Please enjoy, learn, share, celebrate, make small conscious choices, be the change you want to see.
